Recliners Sales Scored Big Alongside Super Bowl

While the recession might have taken away some furniture sales, it seems the Super Bowl is bringing them back. Across the country, during the two weeks building up to the popular American Football event, sales were up. As such, even though the Giants took home the trophy at the end of the day, furniture stores across the United States emerged as winners after the big game.

According to one woman who works at a furniture store, sales of reclining chairs had double digit increases as the super bowl approached. This behavior is actually not that strange as during the winter months, their sales steadily grow as people go into hibernation, sitting in front of the television watching football. Their popularity continues to grow, as the 3.5 billion dollar product line is expected to see growth of around 21% over the next five years.

What was most interesting to me is that these chairs have been advancing in their designs too. My recliner is a clunky piece with a giant wooden handle on the side. Pulling it when I want the leg rest to come out becomes a hassle that can even require you to get off the chair to pull it out. However, today’s chairs have done away with these antiquated pieces and instead, feature much sleeker technology.

Recliners are becoming popular, and lets face it, who doesn't want to sit in all that cushion.

On today’s recliner chairs, you now see pieces that utilize power. Instead of a long wooden pull, there’s just an electronic button that will quietly open out the leg rest. In addition, some of the models include heat, and massage features in their remotes. It’s a whole new world for reclining chairs and at a price point of around $1000, it’s amazing what they’ve come up with.

Where do you guys stand on these reclining chairs? I know my wife hates them for their big clunky shapes, but I’ve always been a quiet fan of their incredible comfort. Do you have one in your house? Does it have the power features or is it more retro like mine? Would you buy one for the Super Bowl? And what happened to people piling up on couches for the Super Bowl? Who sits by themselves? As always, feel free to share your thoughts!
